Meat lover's paradise

Okay, so getting back to dinner out.  B picked me up from work and after waiting in the car outside Quilting Adventures for 45 minutes, I told him that I had planned a "treat" for him.  I made reservations earlier in the day at Texas de Brazil, in Richmond, VA.  I believe these are a franchise and many locations through out the US, but had heard rave reviews about this place, in terms of service, taste, ambiance, etc.

I am not a real meat lover, but for the price, I developed a strategy--easy on the carbs leaves more room for the pricier meat.  The buffet had shrimp and salmon.  The soup was lobster bisque.  No breads or mashed potatoes.  The filet mignon and the beef ribs melted in your mouth.  The lamb was exquisite.  The pork was slightly dry and my least favorite.  The flank steak and sirloin was relish!!!!  The chicken wrapped in bacon was ok.

Pace yourself when you go and you can take advantage of everything.

I don't go out often, in fact almost never.  It was worth the treat (and the price), and if I was planning something special for B (or any meat lover) in the far future, I would consider it again.

Dinner Out

Last night, I surprised B with a dinner out.  He had an appointment in Richmond and came to pick me up at the end of the day.  Instead of taking my vanpool, I took advantage of the occasion and stopped by my all time favorite quilting store, Quilting Adventures!!!!!

http://www.quiltingadventures.com

This is one of my favorite quilting stores in Richmond, VA.  I heard an ugly rumor that they were trying to sell the store and I am not sure if this has happened, but I am definitely bummed.  I like them just the way they are.

Anyway, I found this pattern.  They did not have a mock up, so I this is new territory and I have never used "Kraft-Tex".

Herbs, herbs, herbs

I just added three herbs to my herb ladder.  Sage, dill, and Greek oregano.  Now I have six!!!  the season is very early.  Too early for basil, but I look forward to adding new varieties of basil.   Smells so good.

Bought two more $0.97 watering globes from Walmart.  They glow and reflect in my garden.  So nice to have these herbs handy from the back door and the barbecue.  I will still have some in the garden, but this makes it very easy to add in a jiff. Also, I baked up some Almond croissants from TJ's.  Check them out!!!  Fresh from the oven.

Parsley

It was so convenient to reach out on my deck and slip off a few strands of Parsley for my clam chowder.  What a convenience it is to have an herb garden just outside my kitchen.

Yep, there is the parsley at the top of the ladder.  We got a lot of rain yesterday and I my herbs really thrived in that environment, but I really use parsley a lot, so I think I will add another one to the ladder.
If anyone is interested, I explained how to build/repurpose this ladder in a previous post.

Comfort food for cold, rainy days

So yesterday was a pretty cold and rainy day for the first day of spring. No salads for me. Wanted some warm, creamy comfort food. I looked through my party and found a couple of cans of clams and thought clam chowder. My husband favors Manhattan Style which is tomato based, but yesterday, I wanted thick, creamy stuff so went in search of a New England Clam Chowder recipe. Where???? On Pinterest, of course. My new, mostly go to source, for recipe ideas. Word of caution here, I have had a few pinterest fails. A few real, duds, but for the most part, pinterest has been a solid resource. Particularly when I am looking to make a recipe with what I have on hand. Lots of options. So, I found this recipe for New England Clam Chowder. http://www.davidlebovitz.com/2015/03/new-england-clam-chowder-recipe/ I made only two changes or you can leave it the same and it would be delicious.
New England Clam Chowder 4 large servings or 6 small servings. *I only used canned clams because that was what I had on hand. I am sure it would be relish with fresh ones, but have never made or prepared fresh clams, but David Leibovitz tells you how to prepare them that way. Just, go to the link. *I used whole milk and a 50/50 mix of cream and fat free half and half to come up with 1 1/2 cups *I added a handful of grated Monterey Jack cheese at the very end *The chowder thickens if you let it cool, then reheat it. It also gives the flavors a chance to meld. *I did not have oyster crackers, but did have unsalted saltines and used those. The clam chowder is salty enough because of the clam juice, so I did not miss the extra salt in the saltines. But it si up to you preference. Ingredients 1 1/2 cups of canned clams. I wish I could tell you how many cans to buy, but I noticed that different labels actually contain varying volumes of clams in the can (i.e. more clam juice vs. clams). So you will have to pick a brand and figure out how many clams are actually in the can!! 1 1/2 cups of clam juice. Save the clam juice from the cans and add enough water to make 1 1/2 cups 2 tablespoons butter, salted or unsalted ¾ cup diced bacon 1/2 medium onion, peeled and diced into 1/4-inch pieces 1 large potatoes or 2 small potatoes, peeled and diced(into 1/4-inch pieces salt and ground black pepper generous pinch of smoked paprika. I like the Hungarian smoked paprika, but any will do 1 cup (250ml) whole milk, see comments above ½ cup (125ml) heavy cream, see comments above 1 to 2 tablespoons chopped flat leaf parsley 1 cup Monterey Jack cheese, grated 1. In a soup pot, heat the butter and bacon together over medium heat, for about 3 minutes, until it just starts to curl. Add the onions and cook, stirring, until they’re translucent and soft, 3 to 5 minutes. Add the diced potatoes. You can choose to lightly salt at this time, but I did not and my chowder was plenty seasoned and season with salt. Add black pepper, and paprika. Stir a few times then add 1 ½ cups of the clam broth. Cover and simmer until the potatoes are tender, 6 to 8 minutes. 4. Add the milk and cream. I took about 1 cup of the warm clam juice and added it to the mild and cream first in a separate bowl. Mixed it well. Let the juice and milk/cream reach a common temperature, then added the whole thing back into the soup bowl. Mixed it well, then added the clams and gently warmed until heated through, but do not boil. 5. After 5 minutes, add the cheese, cover and let melt. You can either serve the chowder right away, adding the chopped parsley and serving with the saltines or oyster crackers, or let cool (will thicken) and rewarm gently to avoid separating and serve as above.
Hint I always keep a few canisters of the Pillsbury French bread in my fridge. Although not really a loaf of French Bread, can be used in a pinch for something such as soup . This I used yesterday and It was delicious. I could have added a garlic oil coating, but left it "au natural" and it was very good.
.Bon Appetite Everyone! Let me know how it turns out

Update: Herb ladder

I went to Walmart today and found the glass globe watering spikes for $0.97!!!!! Yikes, that is $2.00 cheaper than Tuesday Morning:( They only had two trays and I am not sure if they are stocked and regularly restocked. Found them in the garden gnome aisle.
On a more positive note, it rained all day and the herbs seemed to thrive in this weather. Grew about an inch!!!

It's raining

I had plans to continue adding to my new herb ladder today, but weather is not on board with that plan. It is raining:(. Hope it stops this afternoon, but I don't see myself potting up any more herbs or flowers in the rain.
The Herb Ladder will have to wait. So, I will clean the house a bit and sew some new projects. I just listed some cute mugmats in my easy store. Stop by to look.
Also, this is great weather for a BBC period drama binge-a-thon....... Some tea in a delicate teacup, on a magmat of course and a yummy pastry.
These are the best yummiest ever. Every time I have the opportunity to go to TJ's, I stop and stock up on these babies. They come in chocolate and almond, both equally relish!!!!! They remind me of the French pain au chocolate. I can't tell the difference. I have served them for breakfasts and they make quite the hit. No one can guess how easy it is to place them on a cookie sheet the night before, lightly spray with PAM, and pop in the oven for 12 minutes the next morning. Get some, get some, get some. Nothing compares with these. They come 4 to a box, but you can make one, two, or all of them. Great flexibility for your needs.

Friday reveal! Repurposed old ladder into herb garden

I could not wait until friday to post, so it is a bit of an early Friday reveal. Ok. So many of you have an old, rickety ladder in the garage that no one uses. A little unstable perhaps. Paint spattered? Half the usable size? What to do? Well, I receive daily Hometalk updates and saw a great idea by SmallTownRabler. Photo and link copied below. She has a great tutorial. http://www.smalltownrambler.com/diy-ladder-herb-garden/
I had such a ladder in my garage. Rarely used. paint splattered. I also had some white high gloss interior/exterior pain leftover from another project as well as a piece of plywood perfectly sized for the bottom rung. Kismet. Fate. Had to be done. So I started out yesterday lugging it out of the garage and gave it a fresh coat of pain, middle of the day because it is still a bit chilly here in Northern Virginia. As the paint was drying, I traveled over to the Dollar Tree. I like this store over other dollar stores because every thing here is truly $1. Bought a planter, and then saw some wind chimes, a thermometer, a garden trowel, etc. and went home. The suction cups on the thermometer did not stick to the paint, so I added a bit of glue and poof, voila. Adherence.
The butterfly wind chimes add a pop of color inside the ladder.
I went to lowes in search of a pail as in the original work, but could not bring myself to spend $19.00 for the item when I had a perfectly serviceable loves canister that needed a $1.98 cover. I concede that it is a bit less stylish that the original work, but I wanted to put my $$cash into the plants. I already had the rosemary, so I planted it in the Dollar Tree planter. On to home depot this morning. Found some Italian Flat Leaf Parsley, Cilantro, and German Thyme. Not too much selection. That was it or I would have bought more. I bought a Pansy pot to fill the hanging basket. On my way home, I drove past Tuesday Morning which I have only been in once since it opened, but I seemed to recall some garden ornaments and such, so I stopped
I bought some glass watering globes (small for $2.99), filled them and stuck them in the herb pots. They are so pretty. Then I found this guy.......
A rain gage ($4.99). Woo Hoo.... How cool is that. Putting it together and this is what I have so far which room to grow. Already smells so nice. Right near the barbecue and a prep table. Just reach over and snip some seasoning.
I will add my watering can to the bottom shelf when next go down to my garden, and then I am finished until I find more plants.

Bibs galore!!!!

I have been on a bib making binge lately. Just can't stop making them. Of course this goes along with really trying to use up my fabric stash. So I find some fabric and a pattern and make as many as i can until I use it all up. My goal this year is to use up as much of what I have and then really concentrate on reorganizing my sewing room. Below is an example of my latest projects. Stop by my Etsy store for more details. Any other ideas on getting rid of your existing fabric stash. I would like to hear what others are doing? Is anyone interested in a fabric swap?

The sinatra progect

Wow. Last minute tickets. U what a score.

Saturday Slug

I had great plans to till my garden today and get it ready for planting, but it rained last night. Ugh!!!!! So little time and when the weather doesn't cooperate, even worse. What to do???? Sew of course..... I just finished another adorable bib and listed it in my Etsy store. You should check it out.
I also listed some crossover reversible bits. They were so much fun to make and I love to use up my fabric stash.
Speaking of fabric stash. Bad weather is a great time to organize fabric. I might just need to do that today. Pinterest and You tube have some great ideas for that. I am limited by by the size of my sewing room, but need to get even more creative in order to utilize space more. My machine is large too, ands to be in one location to allow for ample space to embroider. Perhaps I shall take a pic of my princess. I have the Janome MC 12000 and love it, love, love, love, love it. Best machine ever. No problems with thread tension. Always works perfectly. Hey, I just got a great idea for a giveaway!!!!!!!!! Please post a comment about your sewing machine and what your love about it. I will collect the comments and draw a winner on 3/18/2015. The winner will receive a patriotic Marine Corps pincushion.

At the Movies!!!!

Time for Movie Review. Pop the corn. Kick up your feet. This is a good one.........
I rented The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel from Amazon last night. I will admit that I wasn't too keen on the movie when it came out, but due to a lull created by Downton Abbey Finale, I have been yearning to see familiar faces. Maggie Smith scored!!! She was great. Penelope Wilton's character was tough to like. Love Bill Nighy. Dev Patel so much fun. A recurring theme is best described by Dev when he ??quotes an Indian Proverb "In India, we have a saying everything will be okay in the end. If it's not okay, then it's not the end." I have seen it attributed to John Lennon also, but what the heck..... True is true no matter where it comes from. It makes me feel hopeful after a long day, as in today. It makes me feel hopeful when I look at my house and despair at what needs to be done, cleaning, organizing, throwing out, planning, decorating, etc. It makes me feel hopeful when I can't fix a patient. Hope for a cure for diabetes, because at this point it is still about managing it. The scenery is also wonderful. Very colorful. Very warm. You could almost smell the spicy curry. Made me wish for my very own Best Exotic Marigold Hotel............

Yum Yum

Okay, I am back. Like I promised, I have pics, but my food photographing skills are in the rudimentary, primitive stage. I have signed up and am about 25% of the way through an online course on product photography. I think composition isn't so great, but lighting is very key and that is something I don't have, but am working on. My photographs all have a yellowish tinge despite my adjustments. So, without further delay, I present the KopyKat Kozy Shack Rice pudding. I have never had Kozy Shack pudding, but it must be very, very good, because this recipe is very, very good. What I like most is that it is creamy and rich, but not overly sweet. Barely sweet, in fact. Also, I added the raisins. Would consider soaking the raisins in rum, Grand Marnier, or Calvedos for a little extra flavor.
Just another Monday.......... But it FELT LIKE SPRING TODAY. I left for work in a parka and walked out in a shirt. The sun was shining. I actually continued my walking program to a three-day stretch. Woo Hoo! I have grown 9 tomato plants from seeds (little seedlings now). Can't wait to turnover the dirt in the garden, this weekend. Project weekend!!!!!!!! Plan to plant my spuds on St. Patrick's day. And I have discovered the very best rice pudding recipe. I posted the link yesterday. All gone and I am making another batch, but a double one. My food pics are not ready for prime time, but will try and post the end results later on tonight. Come and check out my store. I am adding new items daily!!!!!!

Sunday, March 8, 2015

I just made the most delicious rice pudding. Yum. Very rich and creamy. I added raisins. So, so good. I have included the link below. This will become my go to recipe. I never had Kozy shack rice pudding, so I can't compare, but WOW, this is delicious.
http://bunnyswarmoven.net/2012/05/copycat-kozy-shack-rice-pudding. am adding some baby bibs to my shop. A few of them with a vintagy petter cottontail-like look and lined with a pale grey terry cloth. I am really liking grey lately. I painted my dining room grey and it is very cool and peaceful. ' Check out these bibs.
The bibs are flannel with a raw edge ruffle. So soft and pretty. I could not resist adding a photo of a Parisian themed bib in a crossover/reversible bible. They should be ready for purchase by the end of today. Come and check them out.

What's for dinner tonight!!! Italian Braciole Stuffed Steak

So I went grocery shopping yesterday and found a sale pack of thin, oval shaped, round steak.  I remembered my mom baking these little "rolled up meat packages" decided to try and make some as well.  I pretty much followed this recipe, but I added chopped, hard boiled eggs as well as some breadcrumbs.  Since the steaks were kind of long, I was able to fully stuff them.  I can't always do that with smaller steaks.  Anyway, I made eight steaks and after all was said and done, only had two left over and they are gone today.  I have made them with traditional sauce as well as a thickened beef and mushroom gravy and both were delicious.

I hope you enjoy.
